FORT WORTH _ Just as it looked as if time would run out on the Vaqueros in the 2017 season opener Nick Rochowski saved day.
In the 88th minute, Fort Worth’s Jamie Lovegrove sent a dead ball restart into the Tyler FC penalty area. Rochowski headed home the game-winner for the 1-0 victory.
The match kicked of the 2017 season in NPSL Texas Conference play at Texas Wesleyan University’s Martin Field.
“Jamie played a great ball in,” Rochowski said. “We had pressed on several chances earlier so we were thrilled to get the late goal.”
The game played out fairly even in the first half. However, the Vaqueros (1-0) took control of the match in the second half against league debutante Tyler (0-1).
New Vaqueros coach Nick Stavrou said he was happy for the Boys in Blue to earn the season opening victory.
“The one thing I talked to the boys was that we had 18 quality players out there, so I had no qualms making subs,” Stavrou said. “I think our subs gave us a spark.”
The Vaqueros return to action at 7:30 p.m. May 20 against Houston Dutch Lions in a special FWISD match. This one game of the season will be played at historic Farrington Field. All FWISD students, faculty and employees get in free.
